Wonder-Mel & Ultra-Olivia

Então, meu amigão Gus tinha comentado, aqui no blog, que a sua filha Melissa tinha se amarrado nas minhas Wonder Girls (thanks, Mel!), e me pediu pra fazer um desenho parecido pra mocinha. Paralelamente, o Pedro, tio das meninas (Mel e sua irmã Olivia), também tinha me pedido pra fazer um desenho pra elas, preferencialmente com a Turma da Mônica (as meninas são fãs).

Daí eu resolvi juntar os dois e fiz esse desenho aí em cima - O Gus tá com a família no Brasil (mas só no Rio de Janeiro, o féla), e o Pedro vai levar o desenho pra ele. Espero que eles gostem!

So my old friend Gus posted a comment here on the blog about how much his daughter Melissa had liked my Wonder Girls picture (thanks, Mel!), and asked me to do a similar drawing for the little lady. Meanwhile, my friend Pedro, the girls's (Mel and her sister Olivia) uncle, has also asked me to do a drawing for them, preferably featuring characters from Monica's Gang (the girls are fans, I'm told).

I then decided to combine both requests, and that's the end result - Gus's in Brazil on vacation with his family (but only in Rio de Janeiro, the bastard), and Pedro's going to take the drawing to them. Hope they like it!

Então, semana passada foi meio punk aqui no trabalho, então nem tive tempo de tocar no arquivo do desenho comemorativo do aniversário de namoro de 4 anos. Diferente da idéia inicial, que era fazer tudo na tablet, acabei imprimindo o esboço e arte-finalizando no papel.

Aí está o resultado: Um quadro do Botero! :D
Hmmm, talvez a gente deva pegar um pouco mais leve na Nutella...

Hey, everyone, I'm back.

So, last week was a bit hardcore here at work, and I didn't even have time to open the file of the 4 years anniversary drawing. So, instead of what I initially thought (doing everything using the tablet), I printed up the roughs, and inked the whole thing on paper.

Here's what I ended up with: A Botero painting! :D
Mmm, maybe we should go easier on the Nutella...

Now, it's on to the colors...

4 - The Drawing

Então eu comecei a fazer o desenho comemorativo de 4 anos pra presentear o Peixe - Minha idéia inicial era fazer só alguns rabiscos na Tablet, pra soltar a mão e formar uma idéia melhor do desenho, mas acabou que gostei bastante do que tava saindo, então vai ser todo na Wacom mesmo.

A cena aí em cima é um típico café da manhã às 4 da tarde na casa do Peixe. E, sim, tenho uma cueca samba-canção dessa cor. Me erra. :P

So I started drawing the 4-year anniversary picture for the Fish. I initially planned to do only a few doodles using the tablet, to get a better idea of what to draw. I ended up liking what was taking shape quite a lot, so it will be done enterely using the Wacom.

The drawing up there is pretty much our usual breakfast at 4 p.m at the Fish's home. And, yeah, I do own a pair of boxers coloured like that. Shut up. :P

Por causa do último feriado prolongado, passado na indispensável companhia DELE, acabei não fazendo um desenho pra postar hoje, mas não podia deixar a data passar em branco. Essa foto foi tirada numa pizzaria em Sampa, no frio congelante da capital paulista.

Hoje faz 4 anos desde que um James extremamente nervoso encontrou um Peixe extremamente ansioso pela primeira vez na estação Tietê em São Paulo. Ele ainda não era "O Peixe" na época, mas hoje ele é isso e muito, muito mais. Só tenho a agradecer por esses últimos 4 anos, e dizer que eu amo MUITO esse cara.

Mal posso esperar pelos próximos 4 anos, e os 4 anos seguintes, e mais 4, e mais 4...

Because of the last extended holiday, spent in São Paulo with HIM, I ended up not drawing something for today, but I couldn't not mention the date (this picture was taken at a pizzeria in the freezing weather of São Paulo).

It's been 4 years today since an extremely nervous James met an extremely anxious Fish for the first time at Tietê station in São Paulo. He wasn't "The Fish" back then yet, but today he is, and so much more. I can only thank him for the last 4 years, and say that I love this guy very, VERY much.

I can barely wait for the next 4 years, and the 4 years that will follow, and the next 4, and the next...

Vellhos gibis novos! New Old Comics!

Só um post rápido pra mostras as belezinhas que chegaram pra mim essa semana - Eu sempre fui um cara que compra meus gibis mais pelos autores (especialmente desenhistas) que pelos personagens, e consegui online algumas preciosidades já antigas (por exemplo, o gibi com o Super-Homem e a Mulher-Maravilha é de 78!), de desenhistas que admiro IMENSAMENTE - Joe Kubert, Alan Davis, Sergio Aragonés, Neal Adams e o FENOMENAL José Luis Garcia-López.

Just a quick post to show off these beauties that arrived at my house this week - I'm a guy who follows authors rather than characters (specially artists), and I've managed to find some gems online (the Superman vs. Wonder Woman comic was published in '78), done by artists I admire IMMENSELY - Joe Kubert, Alan Davis, Sergio Aragonés, Neal Adams and the INSANELY talented José Luis Garcia-López.

You'd be hard pressed to find any Brazilian who doesn't know Monica's Gang. As far as successful comics go, they're by far the best-selling comics in the country, far outselling Disney's comics and any of the usual super-heroes. The comics are obviously directed to children, but everybody reads them, or has at some point. Also, they're publishing a teenage-oriented, manga-inspired comic (this one is only in Portuguese, but you can see what the comic looks like), staring teen versions of the characters.

At various points in my life I've wanted to draw Monica comics, and these pages are an exercise that was supposed to be sent as a test, but I never got around to send it. Maybe someday.

Novo livro!

Então, no fim de abril, o Banco Central publicou mais um livro no qual eu trabalhei. Deu um trabalhão, mas ficou lindo! O nome da criança é "Governança Cooperativa - Diretrizes e mecanismos para fortalecimento da governança em cooperativas de crédito" (ufa!).

O nome é bem auto-explicativo, e o livro foi escrito por uma equipe de autores coordenada por Elvira Cruvinel Ventura. O projeto gráfico do livro ficou sob minha responsabilidade, baseado em uma publicação anterior, a cargo da colega Karen Meiko Nawa, que também trabalhou comigo nesse livro, cuidando de todos os gráficos e tabelas que aparecem na edição.

So at the end of April, the Central Bank of Brazil published another book I worked on. It was a lot of work, but it came out beautifully in the end! The book's called (deep breath) "Cooperative Governance - Guidelines and devices to strenghten governance on credit cooperatives" (loosely translated by me for the blog).

The name pretty much says all about the book, which was written by a team of authors coordinated by Elvira Cruvinel Ventura. I designed the book, based on a previous publication , by my fellow designer Karen Meiko Nawa, who also worked on this book, taking care of all the graphics and charts on this book.

Então - Um amigo, depois de ver o meu desenho com as Garotas de Gotham, sugeriu que eu fizesse um "Garotas de Themyscira". Francamente, quase me bati por não ter me tocado disso antes...rs

So a friend of mine, upon looking at my "Gotham Girls" drawing, sugested I did a "Themyscyra Girls" companion piece. Frankly, I could kick myself for not thinking of it sooner!

Invitation

Essa paginazinha foi feita pra um convite de aniversário, de um colega aqui do trabalho. Fiz bem rápido e, apesar de estar bem simples, gostei do resultado.

This little page was done for a birthday invitation for a co-worker. It was done rather quickly and, despite the simple look, I like it quite a bit.

Greeting Card

Os desenhos aí em cima foram feitos pra um cartão de despedida pra uma amiga aqui no trabalho, que mudou de setor. O primeiro foi feito a partir de uma foto, mas o que mais agradou foi o segundo, que tem um tom bem diferente (ela é uma das minhas companheiras de yoga, e a atividade tem tudo a ver com a personalidade dela).

The drawings on this post were done for a farewell for a friend here at work, who's gone to another division. The first one was done using a photo of her as reference, but the second one got the most praise, and is the one we ended up using on the card. The radical different approach reflects more of her personality, we thought (she's one of my yoga coleagues, and the activity reflects her personality very well).

Cartaz

Esse aqui foi um trabalho feito no começo do ano, para uma exposição na unidade do Banco Central do Rio de Janeiro. Basicamente, o cliente enviou duas fotos de trabalhos que foram expostos e os dados da exposição, e o resto foi comigo. Foi um trabalho super tranquilo, e gostei bastante do resultado.

This one was done for work, at the beginning of the year, for a picture exhibit at the Rio de Janeiro chapter of Banco Central. Basically, the client sent a couple of photos of works that would be on display, and the relevant information. The rest was up to me. It was a job that went very smoothly, and I liked the end results quite a bit.

Bô Francineide

Quem tem mais de 30 com certeza entendeu o título do post (aos mais novos, joga no Google!).
Vi essa moça outro dia no shopping e não tinha como não me lembrar!

The title of the post is a reference that any brazilian person over 30 will get (otherwise, Google it!) - I saw this lady the other day at the mall, and it immediately jumped to my mind!

Bonus post - Them Bears!

Então, um amigo e eu estamos conversando sobre um projeto de trabalho que, se vingar, vai ser muito interessante. Envolve "ursos", uma parcela específica da comunidade gay, na qual o Peixe e eu nos incluímos.

Pros desinformados, de forma bem resumida: Os gays do modelo "Urso" são geralmente gordos, ou grandes, peludos (e frequentemente barbados), com traços considerados mais masculinos e uma atitude mais descontraída, tanto no comportamento quanto na forma de se vestir - Uma espécie de contraponto ao modelo que, aqui no Brasil, ficou conhecido como "Barbie"- Gays musculosos, frequentadores de academias, antenados com marcas da moda, lugares sofisticados e, alguns argumentariam, certa afetação. Aí em cima estão alguns esboços pra essa empreitada.

So, a friend and I have been talking about a work project that wil be quite interesting if we can get it off the ground. It involves bears.

For those who don't know, in a nutshell, "Bears" are a segment of the gay community (of which both the Fish and I are a part) that encompass fat, big men, generally hairy and bearded, who sport a laidback attitude, both regarding their behaviour and manner of dressing. It's kind of a counterpoint to the "gym bunny" model - The muscled , fashion concious gay men with chiseled abs and, according to some, a certain degree of flamboyance. \up there are the first sketches to flesh out what might become this project.

DOGMA - Once more, with feeling!

Então, meu amigo Fritador pediu mais detalhes sobre os bonecos do filme "Dogma", então aqui vai um post melhor trabalhado sobre eles:

Os bonecos são a quarta série de figuras baseados nas filmes do diretor Kevin Smith - As primeiras são "Clerks", "Mallrats" e "Chasing Amy", e a mais recente é a de "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back". As aparência das figuras foi baseada na série animada de "Clerks", que foi um spin-off do primeiro filme. Tanto o design dos personagens na animação quanto nas figuras é do animador Stephen Silver (excelente trabalho, na minha opinião).

Os bonecos não tem articulações, recebendo o hilário título de "inaction figures" - O design simplificado permite um trabalho de escultura MUITO bem feito, e a pintura é praticamente perfeita.

Os personagens dessa leva são os anjos Bartleby e Loki, o monstro de merda Golgothan, e o Jay com metralhadora e o Silent Bob com taco de golfe. Jay e Silent Bob, por aparecerem em todos os filmes, tem versões diferentes pra cada leva de bonecos. Também comprei a figura variante azul do próprio Kevin Smith, que fez um conjunto bem legal com os outros.

Comprei os bebês direto na loja do Kevin Smith, a Jay & Silent Bob Secret Stash. A brincadeira saiu em U$47,99 as figuras (o conjunto completo do Dogma saiu por U$44,99, mais U$3,00 pelo Kevin Smith) mais U$17 pela postagem.

Demorou pouco mais de um mês pra chegar, mas veio tão bem embalado e protegido que eu nem me importei. Os bonecos estavam em perfeito estado, embalagens impecáveis (a arte dos blisters, também do Stephen Silver, é um show à parte), de um jeito que nem a Amazon anda fazendo.

So, guys, this is a proper review of the Dogma figures I posted here a few days ago, as requested by my friend Fritador.

The figures (hilariously named "Inaction Figures", due to the lack of articulation points) are the fourth wave of AFs based on director Kevin Smith's movies, the previous ones being "Clerks", "Mallrats" and "Chasing Amy", and the following being "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back". I also threw a figure of Smith himself in the batch, to make for a nice six-figure set.

The figures are based on the character design work for the "Clerks" animated series that spun off the movie, and it was done, both for the show and the figures, by animator Stephen Silver - Who did an awesome job, IMHO.

The set is composed by angels Bartleby and Loki, poop-monster Golgothan and machine gun wielding Jay and golf cub swinging Silent Bob (these two have different versions for every set of figures, as they appear in every one of the movies). The sculpting is top notch, and the paint job is practically flawless.

I bought these directly at Smith's store, Jay & Silent Bob Secret Stash. They set me back in U$47,99 the figures, plus U$17,00 the shipping. They took a little over a month to arrive, but they were so neatly packaged I didn't mind. Seriously, the packaging was perfect, no creases of folds on the blisters, absolutely no damage whatsoever to the figures - Even Amazon has let me down on this for a while, but the job on these guys was pristine perfect.

Lauruska - Inks

Então, FINALMENTE consegui escanear a versão final do desenho da Lauruska (com sua pet, a Veruska, que é essa coisinha peixe-getalinosa-fofinha), a alquimista do Namorido no jogo Ragnarokk (sim, Gus, é algo tipo WoW). Fiz o desenho em dezembro, e ele tava só esperando ser escaneado pra eu começar a colorir. Obviamente, será postado quando estiver pronto...;)

So I FINALLY managed to scan the finished version of the Lauruska picture (with her pet, the fish-jelly-cute-thing Veruska) - She's the alchemist character of the Husbear on the Ragnarokk online game. I did this back in december, and it was just waiting to be scanned, so I can start coloring it. Obviously, I'll post it here when it's finished. ;)

Esse esboço foi feito a partir de uma fotografia da exposição "Legado Sagrado", do fotógrafo americano do começo do séc. XX Edward Curtis. A exposição esteve em Brasília no Centro Cultural da Caixa no começo do ano, e agora está pra abrir em São Paulo, então fica a dica. ;)

Então, semana retrasada foi aniversário do meu amigo Thomas, do Say it Backwards. Desenhei esse Superboy pra ele, aproveitando que ele adora o personagem, e que Conner Kent aparentemente estará de volta do fim de "Legion of Three Worlds". Esse também foi feito na tablet, do esboço à finalização.

So, it was my friend Thomas', of Say it Backwards fame, birthday a couple of weeks ago, and I drew him this Superboy as a gift. I thought it was appropriate, given that he loves the character, and Conner Kent's apparently returning in the "legion of Three Worlds" book. Oh, and this was also done with a tablet, sketch to finish.

Mecir

Alô, pessoas - Bom, esse ano renovamos nosso equipamento aqui no trabalho, e "ganhei" uma tablet Wacom. Ese desenho foi um dos primeiros que eu fi completamente na tablet, depois de ANOS enferrujado com essa ferramenta. Foi feito usando como base uma foto do prédio do Mecir (Departamento do Meio Crculante, do Banco Central), no Rio de Janeiro.

Hey, people - Well, this year we got new equipment here at work, and I got a spanking new Wacom tablet. It's been AGES since I've used one of those, so this is one of the warm-up drawings I did. It was done used a picture of the Mecir (a department of Banco Central) building as basis.
